SAi recently built its first online art gallery called New Society Art. Founded by Fanuel Muindi, the goal of this brand new platform is to bring together artists to showcase their artwork that engages society by provoking new ideas, perspectives, and thoughts. As a photographer himself, Muindi wanted to have a global platform where he and other artists (especially those with science inspired art) could get together to showcase their artwork with the broader community. This was especially needed now more than ever given the Covid-19 pandemic which limited the number of opportunities for artists to exhibit their work in galleries. Below is a short interview with Muindi regarding the gallery:
Staff: How does the New Society Art Gallery work?
Muindi: Well, the gallery is hosted online at www.newsocietyart.org through one website page. The intention was to cut away the noise and allow the visitor to just focus on the artwork and the artists. Each exhibited artwork links out to the artists’ homepages for visitors to learn more. The showcased art on the website is refreshed every 1-2 months.
Staff: Does the gallery hold opening receptions online?
Muindi: Yes. Each monthly exhibit opening is held online via Zoom. The exhibiting artists are provided several minutes during the opening to present their artwork to an online group of visitors from around the world via Zoom. Our first exhibit took place on Apr 5, 2020 and we had 9 exhibiting artists. I am very hopeful we will continue to have exhibits either once a month or every other month. We’ll just have to wait and see on the interest. Whether we host some in person events in Boston will also depend on the success of the online exhibits. If the New Society community supports in person events, then we’ll do it. For now, we’ll stick to online events.
Staff: How do people know about the dates for new exhibits?
Muindi: Each new exhibit is opened in front of a live online audience. To receive information about upcoming exhibits, it is strongly recommended for people to subscribe to get notifications on exhibit openings and live discussions with artists.
Staff: What is the submission process for artists?
Muindi: Artists can submit their work via a submission form available on the website. They will be notified shorty if their submission is accepted for a given exhibit.
Staff: What is the ultimate goal for the gallery?
Muindi: I would like to think that the gallery will become a global platform for artists to share provoking new ideas, perspectives, and thought through their artwork. Art is one powerful medium we can use to inspire, provoke, and challenge. I am hoping the platform will be a launching point for artists looking to get their work out there. As a scientist, I am also hoping the gallery will also serve as a magnet for showcasing of science inspired art.
